Student Clubs at Simpson . . .

YEARBOOK CLUB

The Yearbook Club meets Mondays at lunch in Room 209; after school several times a year and occassionally on weekends. Club members plan and design the Sir George Simpson Yearbook annually. The club takes great pride in producing a hard cover, full color book in which every student in the school is featured. For further information, please see Mrs. Turnbull or Mrs. Jahner.

ART CLUB

The Art Club meets at noon, every Tuesday and Thursday in the garage art room. This club requires no sign-up .... just "drop-in" and create a piece of artwork.

The After School Art Club meets every Tuesday from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. This is also a "drop-in" club that gives the student an opportunity to try clay, painting or any other form of art they are interested in. For more information on the lunch time or after school Art Clubs, please contact Mrs. Smallwood.

CLIMBING CLUB

The Climbing Club meets at noon, every Wednesday in the small gym. This club will start sometime in the new year and will require each participant to sign a waiver form. Come and drop in for some extreme adventure! Please listen to announcements for further details.

S.G.S. PLAYERS

Both Performing Arts 8 and 9 students are part of this club. Rehearsals are held at noon, after school, and occasionally on a weekend. This extra component allows us to produce a full scale play (P.A. 8) and a full-scale musical (P.A. 9). There are also opportunities for prop and costume sorting and maintenance, or for helping with the production. Other interested students who are not part of the classes can volunteer to help for these extra opportunities as well.

S.G.S. PLAYERS TECHNICAL CLUB

This is for those people who love Drama but prefer to be behind the scenes. They help with lights and sound for Fine Arts night and any other time techies are needed in the school. Some of them help with costumes and props as well.

CHESS CLUB

You are always welcome in the Sir George Simpson Chess Club. We hope you will find the Club to be an enjoyable place for you to come and play the Royal Game. Here you will find many chess players of all abilities and interests, from beginners to intermediate to more experienced players. Whether you prefer just a casual game or two or are here for serious competitive play, we can accommodate you. Come on out and have some fun, and LET’S PLAY SOME CHESS! Please contact Mr. Kolodychuk at kolodychukg@spschools.org or go to room 106 at lunch time!

BOXING CLUB

Boxing is part of the SGS environment since 1989. SGS Boxing Club, also known in the past as St. Albert Boxing Club, offers the opportunity to students to learn about boxing and to train in a safe environment. Boxing sessions usually take place in Fit for Life classes and in April, May and June as an after school club. Although our goal is recreational, some students had the opportunity to represent our school in various local and provincial tournaments.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION CLUB

Welcome to another year of Outdoor Education here at Sir George Simpson. The Outdoor Education Program at Sir George Simpson Junior High School has a long legacy of providing exceptional outdoor experiences.

This year, the Outdoor Education Club will be putting on a variety of different events. The major trips and events that we have planned for the year includes ski trips to Rabbit Hill and to Marmot Basin, hiking and snow shoeing in Elk Island National Park, Canoe Trip on the North Saskatchewan River, and more.

In addition to taking part in our fun filled adventures, this year we will also have a focus on the giving back to the community. “Every year, good kids make bad decisions. They drop out of school, experiment with drugs, or get into trouble with the law. Outward Bound’s Youth Asset Building Adventure (YABA) program is an answer for young people who are experiencing difficulties at home, at school, or in their community. This innovative educational and health promotion program balances personal freedom (independence) with effective group interaction (interdependence), helping the participant to understand that real freedom combines both a high level of individuality and a commitment to community.” (www.outwardbound.ca). The Outdoor Education Club has a goal of raising $2000 so that we can sponsor an at risk youth on an Outward Bound Youth Asset Building Back Country Expedition Course. We will be running fundraisers this year to help us reach this goal.

If you have any questions, please email us at ruffella@spschools.org, johnsonc@spschools.org or give us a call at the school 459-4456.

BOOK CLUB

Book Club runs at lunch hour every Day 2 and is one of our favorite times. At this point in time a small number of students gather to share reading experiences. The Club is quite flexible in its’ goals dependent on the membership. We are reading 2 Nancy Farmer books this year and discussing their personal and political implications in our world. We also share new books that are of interest to us and discuss our philosophies about the issues that arise in the books we read. Often there is a snack and ultimately a feeling amongst the group of trust and a common love of literature. Please feel encouraged to join us even if it is half way through the year. We would love to get to know more readers at Simpson! If you have any questions, please email us at oshean@spschools.org, robinsong@spschools.org or give us a call at the school 459-4456.
